The Jamrani Dam Multipurpose project in Uttarakhand recently received approval under the Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana-Accelerated Irrigation Benefit Programme (PMKSY-AIBP). Recent Approval with Central Assistance, In October 2023, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs approved the inclusion of the Jamrani Dam project under PMKSY-AIBP. This project will receive central assistance of Rs 1,557.18 crore out of the total estimated cost of Rs 2,584.10 crore. The project is scheduled for completion by March 2028.
Jamrani Dam is the seventh project to be included under PMKSY 2.0. The approval highlights the importance given by the central government to ensure water security and expand irrigation facilities.

Irrigation

The dam will provide additional irrigation benefits for 150,302 hectares of land. This includes 9458 hectares in Uttarakhand and 47,607 hectares in Uttar Pradesh.
The major districts to benefit are Nainital, Udham Singh Nagar in Uttarakhand and Rampur, Bareilly in UP. The project will result in doubling the irrigated area in these districts.
Drinking Water
- 42.70 million cubic meters for Haldwani and nearby areas
- Benefit over 10.65 lakh population
The dam will supply 42.70 million cubic meters of drinking water to Haldwani and surrounding areas. This will benefit more than 10.65 lakh people living in the region.
Power Generation
- Installed capacity: 14 MW
- Annual generation: 63.4 million units
A hydropower plant with installed capacity of 14 MW is proposed under the project. This will generate around 63.4 million units of electricity annually.

PMKSY Scheme for Water Security The Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana (PMKSY) was launched in 2015-16 with a mission to expand physical access of water for agriculture.
Under PMKSY, the Accelerated Irrigation Benefit Programme (AIBP) aims to fast track completion of major and medium irrigation projects to create new irrigation potential.
The Jamrani Dam has been prioritized by the central government under this scheme due to the enormous benefits for UP and Uttarakhand.
So far, 53 projects have been completed under PMKSY-AIBP creating 25.14 lakh hectares of additional irrigation capacity. In total, PMKSY aims to cover around 76 lakh hectares of agricultural land under irrigation facility.
