Physiography (Odisha Map)
Orissa has been divided into five major regions based on its physiographical characteristics:

Forests cover almost one-third of Orissa, making up about 37.34% of the state’s total land area. These forests are mostly located in southern and western Orissa.
Climate
Orissa has a tropical monsoon type of climate, similar to most other parts of the country. The average temperature during summers can reach up to 40° C, while winters are pleasant with a minimum temperature of around 16° C. During the monsoon season, Orissa receives an average of 1450 mm of rainfall. The best time to visit the state is during the months of October to April.

A Brief History of Orissa
The region known today as Orissa, pronounced “ODISA,” has a rich history that dates back to several kingdoms, including Kalinga, Utkal, Udra/Odra, Kosala, Tosali, and Kangoda. The name Orissa comes from the Sanskrit “ODRA DESHA” or “ODRA VISHAY.” After being ruled by the Marathas, the Mughals, and the British, Orissa became a part of Bengal in 1912 and remained so until it became an independent state on 1st April, 1936. Transportation Options

The state also has three domestic airports in Rourkela, Jaypore, and Jharsuguda, which are served by Air India, Sahara India, and Kingfisher.
Orissa has an extensive railway network that spans approximately 2,284 kilometers and connects the state capital, Bhubaneshwar, to Calcutta, Madras, Delhi, Bombay, Bangalore, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Tirupati, and Trivandrum via express or super express trains.

Orissa is known for its beautiful hill stations such as Taptapani, Mahendragiri, Olasuni Hill, and Dumuriput. - Ratha-Yatra Festival is a famous festival during which all the Lords of the temple are taken out for a bath and then brought back again. The festival is celebrated for many days, and each day is called by different names.
- Snana-Yatra is a festival in which all the chief deities of the temple are taken out for a bath and takes place on the occasion of Jyestha Purnima.
- Chandana-Yatra is celebrated in April for 42 days, and the first 21 days of this festival are called Baha Chandana.
- Anavasara Festival is a famous festival that people believe cures diseases.
