National Park in India is defined under Setion 35 of Wildlife protection Act of India. National Park in India is "An area, notified by the State/Central government by reason of its ecological, faunal, floral, geomorphological, or zoological association or importance, needed for the purpose of protecting & propagating or developing wildlife therein or its environment."

A National Park Status is the highest level of protection that can be given to an area under the Wild Life (Protection), Act, 1972.

The four steps for formation of National Parks in India are:

Step 2: Investigation and settlement of rights and claims of people living in the proposed National Park area, similar to the process for a wildlife sanctuary area.

Step 3: After the claim period expires and all claims are settled by the state government, all rights regarding lands proposed to be included in the National Park legally vest with the state government.

Step 4: The state government issues a final notification specifying the boundaries of the National Park area and formally declares it as a National Park from a specified effective date.
